Our New Constitution

Viktor Orban, right-wing conservative President of Hungary, wants to restore his country’s glory and grandeur: by tolerating the discrimination and persecution of Sinti and Roma, by suppressing and shutting down unwelcome media, and rushing a new constitution through parliament, he has cleared the way. Full of crypto-clerical and reactionary blather, the preamble defines how the new constitution should be interpreted. And although the installation uses a denationalized translation of this “National Credo” to show how nationalism and a shift to the right are not just a Hungarian problem, recent developments there have intensified the problem to a greater degree than anywhere else in Europe.

Unsere neue Verfassung

Der nationalkonservative Präsident Ungarns, Viktor Orban, verspricht seine Nation in ihren alten Stand der Größe und Herrlichkeit zurückzuversetzen: Toleranz für Diskriminierung und Verfolgung von Sinti und Roma, Schließungen und Gängelung unliebsamer Medien und eine im Eiltempo beschlossene neue Verfassung weisen den Weg. Anhand des entnationalisierten Textes des “Nationalen Glaubensbekenntnis”, der mit kryptoklerikalem und reaktionärem Zeug vollgestopften Präambel, die den Interpretationsmaßstab der neuen ungarischen Verfassung verbindlich festlegt, zeigt die Installation, dass Nationalismus und Rechtsruck kein speziell ungarisches Problem sind, vielmehr ein europäisches.

Konzipiert für und uraufgeführt an der Medienfassade des Collegium Hungaricums in Berlin-Mitte, dem ungarischen Ägquivalent des Goethe Instituts
